Blenheim Palace goes green

Oxfordshire palace says it has invested in solar panels and almost halved water use in past three years

Blenheim Palace has hailed the use of alternative energy in its historic properties after its figures reveal it has embraced green technologies to slash its environmental impact.

The Oxfordshire palace, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, announced last week it has reduced its use of heating oil by 81 per cent as well as cut its overall mains water consumption by 42 per cent since 2013.

Electricity use by the estate this year was at its lowest point for the last five years, it said.

The reductions are in part thanks to the Palace's use of green technologies and energy efficiency measures. In recent years the estate has invested heavily in solar panels and in upgrading its heating systems, with the installation of two biomass boilers and a phased move from a steam to a water-based heating system. Meanwhile a third of all lighting within the palace is now provided by LEDs.

Heather Carter, head of operations at Blenheim, said her team is looking at "every aspect" of the day-to-day running of the estate to see where they can reduce overall energy consumption and make use of alternative energy sources, in order to reduce running costs and minimise the building's environmental impact.

"To continually reduce our carbon footprint year-on-year while simultaneously welcoming more and more visitors to Blenheim is quite an achievement, but there is still a very long way to go," she said in a statement.
